April 2nd, 2011: For the third year of holding a Sack Saturday food collection on Kiwanis One Day, the Ankeny Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis-sponsored Ankeny High School Key Club had its most successful event to date!  Generous shoppers at the Ankeny HyVee and Dahl's grocery stores donated money and food items to benefit the Des Moines Area Religious Council's emergency food pantry network, which serves Ankeny's Red Rock Area Community Action Program located in the Neveln Community Resource Center and other area food pantries.
Cindy Morton, DMARC Red Barrel program coordinator, said donations totaled $485.89 and 1,229 food items!  Shoppers donated by purchasing $5 or $10 sacks containing peanut butter, cans of tuna, cans of green beans, and rice.  Monetary donations will by used by DMARC to purchase food requested by area pantries.  Ankeny Kiwanis Club and Key Club thank HyVee store director Wes Snook and Dahl's store director David Wilson for hosting Sack Saturday.  Sack Saturdays are not the only times customers can contribute to DMARC's emergency food pantry network; HyVee and Dahl's sell the prepackaged sacks of food for patrons to purchase and donate by placing them in the red barrels located near the stores' entrances.
